Avonmouth Coal Terminal
Operated byWestern Anthracite Ltd

The Avonmouth Coal Terminal encompasses three separate terminals all within the curtailage of the docks and combine to make up over 28 acres of concrete hardstanding, with a total storage capacity for 200,000mt of solid fuel. Within the port of Bristol, the Avonmouth Coal Terminal has the advantage of being alongside a deep-water dock capable of receiving and discharging 40,000 dwt. vessels. Less than one mile from the M5 and only six miles from the M4/M5 intersection and with its own dedicated rail siding, The Avonmouth Coal Terminal is one of the most strategically placed fuel distribution points in Britain providing low transport costs to all parts of the UK.

Coal Storage & Preparation Facilities
Since the late 1970's The Avonmouth Coal Terminal has been systematically expanded to accommodate its increasing throughput and now encompasses a 27-acre (11-hectare) double reinforced concrete base. Concrete retaining wall units encircle the site and create extensive internal bays to ensure complete security plus correct product separation and integrity of different materials.

Three separate dense-medium washing plants are employed enabling three different products to be washed simultaneously at a combined capacity of 320 tonnes an hour, 24 hours per day. Once coal has been washed and all inferior material removed, it passes through an extensive range of purpose built self-designed screening plants and into stock.

Finished products are always stored on a clean concrete base and never on unmade ground or a coal carpet. Finally, prior to being delivered to ship, road or rail transport the screened products are carefully re-screened into the vehicle to ensure no undersize material is loaded and customers receive only good, clean, correctly sized fuel.

RAIL SPUR ALONGSIDE PLANT

The Rail Link
The Avonmouth Coal Terminal has its own dedicated rail siding alongside the concrete base, capable of rapid loading of industrial fuels into 1000 tonne trainloads in less than two hours. Domestic grades are screened into railwagon and deliveries of individual wagons can be arranged at very competitive long-haul rates, enabling economic transportation of small consignments throughout Great Britain.

The rail spur is just 500 metres from the main railway network, and has its own weighbridge, linked by computer to the Western Anthracite weighbridge office. Full train loads of industrial grade fuels are regularly loaded and despatched to industrial users.
